石井柏亭 ISHII Hakutei

石井柏亭 ISHII Hakutei

Vétheuil is a small town located in the Île-de-France region along the Seine River, and is known as the place where Claude Monet lived from 1878 to 1881.
Hakutei Ishii made several trips to Europe, and this work was painted during his stay in France from 1923 (Taisho 12).
For Japanese painters, the act of depicting foreign landscapes becomes a question of how far they can express the landscapes of others through their own eyes, and can be a motivation to explore expressions that are only possible for Japanese people. In this work, the outlines of trees and buildings are treated somewhat abstractly, and a style of painting that defines shapes with outlines is used, showing elements reminiscent of Ukiyo-e and landscape paintings. Through this technique, the composition of the painting harmonizes the foreign landscape with a Japanese sensibility.
