奥村光正 OKUMURA Mitsumasa
Still life on a table

Mitsumasa Okumura completed his graduate studies in oil painting at Tokyo University of the Arts, received numerous awards in Japan, and moved to France in 1972, where he based himself in Paris. He passed away there in 1997 at the age of 55.
This work is thought to have been painted outdoors or by a window bathed in sunlight. The shadows of leaves, translucent in the sunlight, fall on the back of the table. Areas receiving strong light appear brighter than their original colors, while deep shadows spread across the foreground. The coffee grinder and seashells placed within this scene, though abstracted, possess a strong sense of presence thanks to the skillful manipulation of light, which brings out their textures.
