NAKAGAWA Kigen
Portrait of Female

Currently, the museum has three works by Kigen Nakagawa from the 1920s, including "Makeup" which was exhibited at the 9th Nikaten Exhibition, and this will be the first time this work is exhibited. He traveled to Europe from 1919 to 1921 and studied under Henri Matisse, and this work was produced during that period.
By minimizing the three-dimensionality and subtle changes in light and dark of each subject and reducing the layering of different colors, he has achieved a vivid and clear picture. As Nakagawa approached the end of his life, he began to shift towards a more fantastical style of expression, making use of the faded tones of his brushstrokes.
