間部時雄 MABE Tokio

Copy of Millet's "Mother's Thoughts"

間部時雄 MABE Tokio

This is a work copied by Tokio Maebe of Jean-François Millet's 'A Mother's Care,' who is known for masterpieces such as 'The Sower.' Millet's depictions of peasants were also popular in Japan and influenced many Japanese painters. Among them, Tadashi Asai was so influenced that he is called 'the Japanese Millet.' Tokio Maebe studied under Tadashi Asai, and copying Millet's paintings may have been not only a means of studying to explore his own artistic style, but also a way to vicariously experience the aesthetics of his teacher, Tadashi Asai.
