川島理一郎 KAWASHIMA Riichirō
Early summer in Southern France, Nice suburbs

It depicts the park in front of the residence of Henri Matisse, whom Kawashima admires. In the piercingly clear sky, there are small, cotton-candy-like clouds, and on the park path, a mother and child are walking hand in hand, with the child's joyful gestures clearly visible. Possibly influenced by Matisse, the colors are vividly organized, and the brushwork is relaxed, yet the expression still retains the distinctly Eastern atmosphere characteristic of Kawashima. The canvas shows no signs of having been re-stretched and has relatively little deterioration, so it is thought to have been created in 1951, the year he reunited with Matisse, Picasso, and others.
