平賀亀祐 HIRAGA Kamesuke
Le Loing

The scene depicts the Loing River from a spot with a view of a church on the left. On the right, everyday life in the town is captured, with people doing laundry and walking dogs. The technique of scumbling, in which paint is layered to lightly graze the surfaces of houses and walls, is used to convey their texture, while transparent colors are applied in thin, successive layers in a glazing technique to depict the water surface. In this plein air study at Moret-sur-Loing, a sacred place for Impressionists, Hiraga could not have helped but recall the works of Sisley and others, yet one can feel a warm perspective that sets him apart from other painters.
