DOBASHI, Jun'ichi(Jun)
Spanish fantasy

Jun Dobashi spent most of the time after World War II overseas, and until recently his name was hardly known in Japan. He was a painter who created unique, fantastical abstract worlds based on landscapes he actually saw, and one of the attractions of his works lies in the bold, yet delicately constructed texture (matière). The use of creative paints, such as added pigments, and traces of pre-existing materials being pressed onto the paint before it dried, show a tendency toward vague abstraction (informel), a trend that was widespread around 1960. However, the artist's flawless composition, which values the primal experience of painting, is unparalleled.
