糸園和三郎 ITOZONO Wasaburō

道化師を描いた作品はピカソがバラの時代（1905-1907）に一連のサーカスの作品を発表して以来、日本でも広島晃甫らをはじめたびたび描かれてきた。糸園のこの玉乗りは、ピカソが描いた玉乗りの少女のように両手を上げているが、全神経を玉乗りに集中させている点でこれまでのものとは異なっているように思える。特に、膝と足首の白色が力加減をよく表している。
Since Picasso produced a series of circus works during his Rose Period (1905-1907), works depicting clowns have been frequently painted in Japan, including by artists such as Hiroshima Koho. Itozono's ball-juggling figure has both hands raised, just like the girl Picasso painted, but she appears to be completely focused on the ball, which makes her seem different from previous works. The white color of the knees and ankles, in particular, clearly shows the strength of the figure's movements.
