八島正明　YASHIMA Masaaki

奥の建物では竹あるいは木材が立てかけられ、手前の小屋には何かが結わえて雑然と積み重なっている。建材置き場か校庭の片隅だろうか。地面には本人不在の影だけが不気味に地面にへばりついている。人間の存在は影ではないかと考える筆者の問いかけを絵画化した、安井賞を受賞した翌年の作品である。

In the building in the back, bamboo or lumber is leaning against the wall, and in the shed in the foreground, something is tied up and piled up in a messy pile. It could be a building materials storage area or a corner of a schoolyard. On the ground, only an absent shadow clings eerily to the ground. This work, created the year after winning the Yasui Prize, illustrates the artist's question: is human existence a shadow?
