Ito Shoba often paints female figures with historical and narrative themes.
The subject of this work is the kabuki play "Shiokumi: Drawing the Tide."
After incurring the wrath of the Emperor, Ariwara no Yukihira was exiled to Suma. There he met a female diver named Moshiho who was drawing the tide. Yukihira named her Matsukaze, doted on her, and the two fell in love. Eventually, he received permission from the Emperor to return to the capital, and left Suma, leaving his kariginu kariginu (traditional hunting costume) and eboshi (black eboshi) hat on a pine tree as mementos. Matsukaze put on the keepsakes and danced, reminiscing about her and Yukihira.
