伊原宇三郎　IHARA Usaburō

This work depicts the port of Honfleur, a town known for being loved by Impressionist painters. One can observe light, brisk brushwork on a finely woven canvas. The shape of the sea from the distant view to the foreground port forms a gentle S-curve, creating variation on the canvas along with the curves of the boats. This piece was exhibited at the first exhibition of the Artists' Hall Construction Exhibition held by the Japan Artists Association at Nihonbashi Takashimaya in Tokyo. A total of three exhibitions were held, and the hall was completed in 1962, continuing to the present day. Given that Ibara was involved with the organization from its founding and had experience supporting the chairman, Sotaro Yasui, as head of the committee, the construction of the hall was likely also a long-cherished wish for him.
