Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes
The Disasters of War 63, For the common grave!

This work is one of the more difficult to interpret in the series on the horrors of war.Art historian Lafuente interprets it as a straightforward reference to a votive offering to a venerated icon. There are dolls and paintings on the right side of the screen, and many masks on the left, and the masks in particular have a somewhat eerie feel to them.Although the offerings are piled up like this, the toilet placed in front of the masks and the behavior of the people show that they are of very little importance as offerings.
