EBIHARA Kinosuke

Butterfly

EBIHARA Kinosuke

Anthropomorphic butterflies are placed against a mosaic of red, blue and green color planes. The butterfly on the lower right looks as if it is trying to escape, covering its face, which reminds me of Masaccio's "Expulsion from Paradise" (c. 1425, Brancacci Chapel, Florence). Speaking of the chapel, these mosaics look like stained glass, and this work was created miraculously while incorporating the glittering elements seen in Chagall's works. Butterflies are one of Ebihara's signature motifs, and his works can be found at museums such as the Niigata City Art Museum (Butterfly, winner of the Grand Prize at the 5th Japan International Art Exhibition in 1959) and the Miyake Museum of Art (Kagoshima City).
