森 義雄 MORI Yoshio
Barn in Épiais-Rhus

This work depicts a rural area near Auvers-sur-Oise, the place where Van Gogh spent his final days, yet rarely visited by Japanese people. Yoshio Mori seemed to prefer and paint idyllic landscapes. The soft green grass, the walls and roofs of old buildings that harmonize with the color of the road. One can sense Yoshio Mori's delight in applying the heavy textures of French buildings and the colors of nature suited to oil paint on the canvas from the light touches of his brush and palette knife. By rendering the sky in a purplish gray, the entire composition is finished with an elegant and calm tone.
